Creativity thrives with constraints - WHAT!?
Creativity is free- It cannot be held back- Imagination is beyond the clutches of the material world- It cannot be hindered!
Okay okay it’s enough! I get your point. But just allow me to place a different side of the coin–
Let’s get into this like this- What if I tell you that Creativity actually thrives with constraints. Sorry, but I would like to agree to this point that Jake Parker seems to make pretty much every time. No, I totally agree with that! Creativity THRIVES with CONSTRAINTS. Why am I making this point? Well, have you ever wondered the actual reason why artists resort to “art-prompts” before beginning an illustration? The reason is none other than creating a perimeter before beginning an illustration! Creating a perimeter for the thoughts to channel in a particular direction so that we can come with a unique idea! Isn’t it? Yeah that is it!
Like, I’ve set myself a timer of half an hour to finish this blog as I’m writing it :)
This is why we’re given literal ‘topics’ to write essays on, in school, instead of just saying ‘go home & write an essay’. Constraints should also include a timer! Yes! Otherwise, you might just end up just thinking instead of actually doing work, in other words- procrastination. You keep on procrastinating to perfect the idea that you might have come up with. And this is why teachers also give a last date of submission for the given assignment. So, the full sentence becomes- “Write an essay on ‘creativity & constraints’ and submit it within 27th April, 2022”. Now, that’s an actual constraint. You’re forced to complete writing the essay within the stipulated time. Now, your mind will be boosted to curate an idea quite skillfully which will be viable for you to complete it. This whole idea of “constraints” also echoes the idea of “FINISHED NOT PERFECT” (Click here to read about it)
So, whenever you try to do something that might force you to stir up the creative juices inside your brain, create a constraint and conquer your task or project that’s been hanging around for long!
